The Supernatural Kids Cookbook 11/11/11 Special Edition Nancy Mehagian 9780983812029 Books Reviews
What a fantastic little cookbook, designed to entice kids into the kitchen to get creative. Best of all, most of these delicious-sounding recipes are vegetarian, so they are healthy without being boring. You can tell just by reading these simple-to-follow, well-crafted recipes that they are loads of fun to prepare and consume.
The illustrations are completely adorable as well as instructive. There are a few pages devoted to explaining kitchen basics to curious chefs then close to sixty fabulous recipes, everything from scrumptious salads and sandwiches to hearty casseroles, soups and delicious desserts. Encouraging mindful eating at such an early age can only be a good thing! By making cooking this much fun, the author sets little minds and tummies off on the path to a lifetime of good health.
This colorful cookbook is simply brilliant and guarantees hours of imaginative fun in the kitchen. Get it and get cooking!

I highly recommend this wonderful first cookbook. As a whole-foods based cooking instructor, I've used this book as the basis for a class. The recipees are a success with children and adults. There is a nice glossary of cooking terms, and a guide to cooking equipment in playful sketches. The artwork is a delightful part of this book and reflects the author's colorful, incredible life.
I've given this book as gifts on several occasions, and it has always been a hit!
My boys love to cook and have a bunch of cookbooks aimed at kids. Here's what I like about this one It doesn't talk down to them, and it's not written in TV-speak. Normal recipes with fresh ingredients and a lot of whole grains. Simple explanations about why to do something this way or that, or why two flavors go together particularly well. Just about everything in this book is something my kids could and would make, and something our family would eat happily. Definitely a plus for any family kitchen.
My favorite childhood memories were when my brother & I "had" to cook dinner once a week (our mother hated cooking)...I remember our first cookbook, funky 1950's black & white, pedestrian recipes even little kids could make.
WELL, Nancy Mehagian's book is that one on steroids, super turbo-charged, eye-poppin', lip smackin good and guaranteed to create a lifetime of not only happy memories, but drooling good food, countless hours of fun in the kitchen, but most of all, good gustatory habits from the get go.
Get it for the little mites & you'll never regret it. Many happy meals of the day....
Kids are tough critics with books and food. If they hate either, they're typically upfront about their disdain. If your kids are like mine, this book will earn itself (and you) an enthusiastic thumbs-up.
Two challenges for parents of young children are 1) making useful tasks fun & interesting and 2) making nutritious food delicious. We discovered that The Supernatural Kids Cookbook accomplishes both. The cover caught my eye and then when we received the book, I saw that the cover artwork flows throughout its 76 pages without being overbearing. It also features a perfectly categorized table of contents with no more than a handful of recipes in each, a glossary in the front (thank you for thinking of that) and list of equipment you'll need (all common) for your young chefs.
Creative recipe names like Hippotatoes and Sweet and Sassy Slaw are memorable and just plain fun to say. And as if this book's kid-appeal wasn't strong enough, there's a recipe in the back for dog treats! I haven't prepared that one yet, but I gotta tell you the ingredients sound rather tasty to me.
I would definitely add the Supernatural Kids Cookbook to my kitchen. In our home it has generated some satisfying family time that has, so far, always ended with deliciousness.
I give it 2 stars because it is mainly vegetarian and that is refreshing. Otherwise, I ordered this book for my children thinking the recipes would be exciting and different (judging from the names of some of the recipes mentioned in the review), but sadly I now realize, the inspiration died there, with the clever names.
The book has no photographs of any of the recipes, and some of them are too basic (i.e. cheese sandwiches, plain quesadillas... Seriously!!??). The savory flavors mainly rely on tamari sauce. C'mon! We want our children eating garlic, onions, herbs! Real spices.
My children have one rule when it comes to new food "Never refuse to try it. Take a little bit and then decide if you like it or not" And with this simple rule they have been able to enjoy delicious dishes from many cultural and geographical origins.
Great gift for kids and their helpers!
