A new job, a new city, and hopefully a new life. When chubby gamer Oliver Barnaby receives a job offer from the best boutique game developer in the country, he leaves his family and his less than spectacular existence in Oklahoma without a second's hesitation. Determined to change more than his career and his geography, Oliver implements a plan to finally land a boyfriend. Step one is improving his skills in the bedroom.

Attractive, successful, charismatic Jaime Snow has a life other people envy. His already booming business is growing. He isn't lacking friends. And he has no trouble finding a date. But there's an emptiness in Jaime's heart and a hole in his life that only the right man can fill.

When Oliver and Jaime end up at the same bar at the same time, they each see something they want in the other. Going to bed together that first night is easy. Building the lifetime relationship they both desperately crave will require trust, time, and a little understanding.

Not a Game A Contemporary Gay Romance Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Cardeno C Michael Ferraiuolo LLC The Romance Authors Books

Cardeno C (CC) has once again provided us with a very enjoyable love story. I have always referred to his books as comfort food for the brain. This book is no exception to that description but it does involve a principal character that is unusual in this M/M erotic romance genre. Oliver, who has recently moved from Oklahoma to Seattle for a job with a company that produces digital games and has offered Oliver a dream job. Oliver is not your typical romance figure, in that he is heavy and hairy. He is also a bright, sweet, and charming gay man who desperately wants to find a sole mate but is so inexperienced sexually that he fears he will never accomplish this without someone to teach him what to do sexually. Since he finds it impossible to try to pick up someone, even at a gay bar, he orders an escort and arranges to meet him in a gay bar. While he is waiting there, Jaime, who is gorgeous, successful and wealthy sees Oliver and picks him up since, because, once again unusual in this genre, Oliver is exactly the type of guy he desires. There is a major misunderstanding between the two of them, but Jaime exploits it even though he fears that Oliver will break off their quickly developing love affair if he finds out the truth. As in almost all of CC's books, this is the "bump in the road" that has to be fixed and CC is really good about solving problems like this fairly quickly so as to avoid prolonged angst. This is a wonderful story that is a pure delight to read. So I highly recommend that you buy this fabulous book, and enjoy CC's latest comfort food for the mind.

Such a cute story!!

Oliver, overweight with lowish self-esteem because an ex told him he was bad in bed, is looking for ways to better himself so he'll attract more guys. He's sweet and funny and just an all around, fun guy but he doesn't believe that of himself. Deciding to answer an escort ad in the bag of a magazine, he figures that will help when he finds another relationship...

Jaime, a company co-owner on this side of middle aged notices Oliver in a bar and is immediately attracted to his body type and the book that he's sitting with is a book that Jaime himself, wrote years ago. Planning to talk to him about it and let that be his "in", Oliver mistakes him for the escort he's hired from the ad. Jaime hears Oliver's insecurities and finds him endearing, so he pretends to be the escort, meeting Oliver on the weekends and spending time getting to know him and teaching him to accept himself see that there are people, Jaime especially that'll love him for who he is AND what he looks like.

I have to admit, I didn't see the connection to Jaime and Oliver's jobs before it came to light, then I was like... oh, DUH... lol that was a cute little twist.
Over the course of the weeks and dates, Jaime works hard to get Oliver to open up and trust him enough to see himself through unjaded eyes. He does, eventually and their banter is hilarious and really cute. I loved how patient and understanding Jaime was, he was really good for Oliver.

I also liked the friendship that Jaime had with his ex-Jack. It's nice, reading a low angst book where exes can still be friends and there isnt any pettiness or hurt feelings. I get that it was probably hard on Jack at first to see Jaime moving on, but he was mature about it and he understood as well. I liked the way that was handled and the way Oliver encouraged Jaime to be there for Jack at the end their, that was really sweet.
And that ending ) How incredly sweet was that ending. I was sad to see it end.
I'd gladly read more about these two and i'm hoping that Jack gets his Oliver, maybe in a next book or something.

The only complaint I really had was, I did think it was a bit expensive to be an ebook, but it was a good story, so I can't complain too much.
Great read!
So, I’m going to be honest. I just don’t have time to read anymore. Which is insane, because I’m someone who has inhaled books all of my life. For the last year or so, though, my reading-for-pleasure time has dwindled to almost non-existent, and I horde it like gold, generally allocating it only to my very short list of auto-buy authors and the occasional recommendation of good friends. I had never heard of Cardeno C.—actually, now that I review her catalog some of the covers do look familiar, but I had certainly never made time to read her—and it was a happy string of timing and coincidences that led to me actually reading Not A Game. First, a Facebook recommendation by someone I pay attention to… which included a pic of the cover… which was obviously set in Seattle (and I love local-to-me stories!)… and then a spare few minutes that I was able to skim through the look inside… and *boom* —> that put it on my TBR list.

** ACTUAL REVIEW STARTS HERE, I JUST REALIZED ALL OF THAT^ IS RAMBLING… HAHAHA!***

OK so … I love sweet romance. And by “sweet” I most definitely do not mean without the sex (spoiler-not-spoiler there is sex here!), but rather sweet in the sense of low-to-no unnecessary drama and angst, and characters that you can genuinely believe are a) real, and b) love each other. Oh, and c) you actually *care* that they do -) Cardeno C. delivered all of that with this sweet book, mixed into the fake relationship trope that yes, is fun and done many times before, but still managed to feel genuine and fresh and gave a great premise for the love affair to develop between these two.

I’m really glad I took the time (blew off work for the day *sigh, me*) to read it (I went on a reading binge yesterday… hahaha! nothing by small measures, here). I’m not usually a fan of big age gaps/May-December romances, but again, these two were well written characters and it felt “natural” … perfectly right.

Other things I enjoyed about the story

— It was interesting and refreshing to read about a non-underwear-model MC, especially in the sense of having him fully appreciated by his man. While all romance reading is a bit of a perfect-world fantasy (at least, the type I gravitate toward is), body insecurity—especially when it comes to getting naked with someone else—is such a universally understood feeling that it made Oliver instantly relatable. And regardless of his weight, shape, etc.—even if he had been that underwear model—it’s just lovely to read about lovers who fully accept and appreciate everything about each other.

— The gaming world. OMG. I am not a gamer. I know very little about gaming, other than that gleaned from reading stories like this and some research I’ve done for my own work, but I am a mother of burgeoning gamers, and I VERY MUCH appreciated the inclusion of the little side-storyline there re the vomit-worthy sexism in the gaming world. I won’t spoil by saying more, and it really was just a side thing, but still. Kudos -)

— Nice guys. I love nice guys. Not so big into bad boy romance, and I just loved that everyone except the unnamed ex was just… nice. Good people make me happy. This book made me happy.

So… would I recommend it to others? Yes (I have). Am I glad it’s on my kindle for possible re-reading in the future? Yes. -) Very nice job, Cardeno C.
